London Bridge Hospital is a CQC rated 'Outstanding' hospital and campus

This multi-specialty private hospital with a large campus on the south side of the river Thames. The hospital has over 170 patient ensuite bedrooms. Due to its size and proximity to London's leading teaching hospitals, it boasts breadth and depth in almost every specialty. The 800+ consultant physicians and surgeons are among the best in the world and enable the hospital to treat the most complex of patients in high volumes. Being adjacent to London Bridge’s main station and underground, and nearby NCP parking, the hospital has excellent transport links.

Patients come from across the UK and further afield to receive both routine and complex care, and the latest treatments including: da Vinci® Robotic surgery for prostate, gynaecology, Head & Neck and thoracic surgery; the ExcelsiusGPS® Robotic Navigation System for spinal surgery; Shockwave treatment for blocked coronary arteries, and liver, renal and stem cell transplantation.

Independent Regulator Reviews

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rates the hospital ‘Outstanding’, specifically highlighting its Critical Care, Outpatients and Diagnostics, Responsiveness and Leadership. The hospital bases much of its care on a multidisciplinary (MDT) team model, where patients requiring surgery or complex care will have their case discussed at a MDT meeting. There, consultants by specialty and all clinicians involved in a patient’s care will discuss and agree proposed treatment.

Hospital services

Services include: physiotherapy (inpatient and an outpatient gym in The Shard), health screening, Private GP services, an Urgent Care Centre, dietetics, a JAG accredited endoscopy unit (JAG accredited March 2021), 14 Level 3 Intensive Care (ITU) beds and six Level 1 ITU beds, a number of diagnostic imaging centres covering all imaging modalities, onsite pathology and pharmacy, and One-Stop breast, gynaecology, Head & Neck, and urology clinics.

Staff and facilities

The 700+ strong staff include: clinical nurse specialists (sub-specialising in their field), radiographers, physiotherapists, pathologists, dietitians, pain clinicians, intensive care clinicians, specialist tissue (wound care) nurses and more. Rapid recovery programmes, rehabilitation pain medicine, and wound care specialists support the delivery of care, safely.

The hospital’s campus consists of: the main hospital on the river (121 inpatient, en-suite bedrooms), The Shard diagnosis and outpatient treatment centre with 78 consulting rooms, Private Care at Guy’s (50 inpatient, en-suite bedrooms), St Olaf House and Emblem House outpatient centres, a nuclear medicine department and outpatient clinics in The City.

Dedicated wards and units

There is a dedicated 29 bed orthopaedic, spinal and neurological ward, a 24 bed surgical and medical ward, and a 28-bed ward for cardiac, vascular, and thoracic patients. London Bridge Hospital's 50 bedroom dedicated cancer centre is located 5 minutes away and was recently rated 'Outstanding' for its Leaders in Oncology Care (LOC) cancer services. Dedicated wards mean that clinical staff specialise in their respective fields of medicine so patients benefit from the expertise and experience necessary to optimise recovery and pre-empt clinical needs.

Outcomes and data

According to the National Joint Registry (NJR), the hospital achieved good outcomes for their complex orthopaedic joint procedures - for example patients undergoing knee replacement experience some of the lowest revision rates (the proportion of surgeries needing to be redone) in London. And according to the NJR, they host one of the country's highest performing hip replacement specialists, Mr Hugh Apthorp.

They also performed well in their less complex orthopaedic procedures such as knee arthroscopy and rotator cuff repair surgery, achieving good outcomes, reviews and large volumes.
